Austria 50 Schilling Silver Coin – 600 Years of the University of Vienna (1965)
A sovereign tribute to Austria’s oldest seat of learning.

This commemorative 50 Schilling silver coin was issued in 1965 to mark the 600th anniversary of the University of Vienna, founded in 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV, known as Rudolf der Stifter (“Rudolf the Founder”). The university became a cornerstone of European intellectual life, nurturing generations of scholars in theology, law, medicine, and philosophy.

The reverse features a regal portrait of Rudolf IV wearing a crown and ceremonial robes, symbolizing his legacy as a patron of education and culture. The inscription “1365 UNIVERSITÄT WIEN 1965 RUDOLF DER STIFTER” encircles the design, anchoring the coin in historical reverence. The obverse displays Austria’s heraldic shields surrounding the denomination “50 SCHILLING,” framed by “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH.”
