“10 Deutsche Mark – Munich Olympics 1972 – Two Athletes Kneeling”
This is one of six commemorative designs issued by West Germany for the Games of the XX Olympiad in Munich. Each design was minted by four different mints (D, F, G, J), resulting in 24 variants total.
The 1972 Munich Olympics—officially the Games of the XX Olympiad—were held in West Germany from August 26 to September 11, 1972. Designed to present a modern, democratic, and optimistic Germany, the event was known as “Die Heiteren Spiele” (“The Cheerful Games”). Munich introduced iconic elements such as the “Bright Sun” logo by Otl Aicher, the first official Olympic mascot Waldi, and the revolutionary Olympic Park with its sweeping acrylic-glass canopies. Although the Games were overshadowed by the tragic Munich massacre, they remain a defining moment in Olympic history and a symbol of architectural innovation and cultural renewal.
