Georgios Papanicolaou: A Legacy of Life-Saving Discovery
Born in 1883 in the small Greek town of Kymi, Georgios Papanicolaou grew up inspired by his physician father and a deep love for science. After studying medicine in Athens and Germany, he emigrated to the United States, where his groundbreaking research changed the course of women's health forever.
In 1928, he introduced a simple yet revolutionary method for detecting cervical cancer early—what we now know as the Pap smear. Though initially overlooked, his work gained global recognition in the 1940s and went on to save millions of lives.
