Perched on the islet of Palatia, the Portara—a towering marble doorway—is all that remains of a grand temple begun in the 6th century BCE. Though intended for Apollo, legend whispers a more romantic tale: it was here that Theseus abandoned Ariadne after slaying the Minotaur. Heartbroken, she was found by Dionysus, god of wine and ecstasy, who fell in love and carried her away.
