Meteora – Monasteries in the Sky

Meteora is one of Greece’s most breathtaking landmarks, famed for its monasteries perched atop towering sandstone cliffs. Located in central Greece, near the town of Kalambaka, Meteora combines natural wonder with spiritual devotion. The name “Meteora” means “suspended in the air,” perfectly describing the monasteries that seem to float above the valley.

The rock formations themselves are millions of years old, sculpted by natural forces into dramatic pillars that rise hundreds of meters above the plain. Beginning in the 14th century, Orthodox monks sought refuge here, building monasteries high on the cliffs to escape invasions and to devote themselves fully to prayer. At its peak, Meteora hosted 24 monasteries, though only six remain active today.

These monasteries are not only centers of faith but also treasures of Byzantine art, preserving centuries-old icons, manuscripts, and frescoes. Each monastery is a symbol of resilience, spirituality, and the enduring strength of tradition.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Meteora is both a sacred place of pilgrimage and one of Greece’s most visited cultural landmarks. To this day, the site represents a harmony between human devotion and the majesty of nature.
